Description
Cabezon peak is to New Mexico as Monument Valley is to Arizona. This iconic landmark on the Albuquerque horizon is about as old west as the old west can get. Unlike Monument Valley, though, it's relatively unknown outside New Mexico. Sitting roughly an hour and a half north of the Albuquerque metro, it's unknown to many New Mexicans as well: many have glimpsed it from afar, fewer have actually gone to hike it or explore the volcanic fields surrounding it. Like Devil's Tower in Wyoming, this peak is a volcanic plug: lava that built up in the neck of a volcano. Over the years, the elements have worn down the sides of the volcano and all that remains is the solidified neck. New Mexico is home to many of these land features. Cabezon is perhaps the second most prominent (the first being Shiprock).
