Description
Three distinct landforms cross their paths at Great Sand Dunes National Park in south-central Colorado: plains, desert and mountains. The plains here are actually a valley floor, and it's said that the sand is actually volcanic ash from when the Sangre de Cristos were active. The san luis valley floor (foreground) is actually made up of ash, and the wind carries the ash to the mountains where it builds up into dunes.
